Levels

The carpenter worked without stop
But stopped to ask, to verify
‘Should I level the counter top?’
‘Level to what?’ was the reply.

An owner's thoughts can mystify;
Of foolishness, never a dearth,
Thought the carpenter. What is my
Response? ‘Um… level to earth?’

This did not the owner placate.
Without a center, what common ground?
She has no cause to equivocate
And coldly says: ‘The earth is round.’

Twice to measure, once to cut.
But how to measure, ‘Level to what?’?
